Why is it important to wear a chef uniform?
Wearing the appropriate uniform is just one positive step you can take towards ensuring food safety.
Chefs must wear the correct protective clothing in food areas at all times, as this will help to ensure that any contaminants carried on normal clothing, such as pet hairs or dirt, do not contaminate the food.
Most people take the chefs’ uniform for granted, but there are good reasons for each piece of clothing.
Chef’s jacket: The typical chef's jacket is made of heavy white cotton. This fabric is important because it acts as insulation against the intense heat from stoves and ovens. Since there are two rows of buttons, the chef can re-button the double-breasted jacket to change sides whenever a side gets soiled during the course of work during a shift
Chef’s trouser:
Chefs wear either black pants or black and white checked pants.
Why do chefs wear pants?
Why are Chef Pants Baggy? Chef pants are baggy to help keep chefs cool in the kitchen, which can be an extremely hot environment. As well, the loose pants give cooks room to move around with ease, bend over, etc. Chef's pants often have large pockets in them to accommodate kitchen tools or hand towels.
Scarf/ neckerchief: Chefs wear white neckerchiefs, knotted in the front. These were originally designed to absorb perspiration. Nowadays, chefs wear the neckerchiefs to keep the tradition and finish the look of their uniforms.
Why do chefs wear neckerchiefs?
Chefs wear neckerchiefs to help them stay cool in warm kitchens. This piece of fabric absorbs sweat and prevents it from dripping into the dishes being prepared, so it can help your commercial kitchen stay sanitary.
Apron:
Usually made of thick cotton fabric and is worn around the waist with the help of a long string reaching below the knees to protect the chefs from any spilling hot liquids. The string of the apron helps to hold the chefs’ kitchen towel in place.
Kitchen towel/ duster:
They help in holding and pick up hot pots and pans and also to wipe hands in order to keep them dry.
Shoes: The shoes should be black and well polished. To prevent slipping the sole should be made of rubber. Black socks a standard in our kitchens (preferably the sweat absorbing cotton variety).
HOW TO CLEAN PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
Cleaning any clothing is important to maintaining hygiene, from casual wear to work uniforms. But cleaning protective clothing is extremely important. Keeping your protective clothing clean and well maintained is the best way to ensure it does its job.
Oven gloves will protect your hands from hot cookware when using ovens and other cooking equipment. Their heat resistant construction makes it safe for you to remove baking trays, dishes and other cookware from ovens without burning your hands.
